Originally published in 1970, this book gives a comprehensive account of the properties of ice, the connections between them and the way in which they derive from the structure of the water molecule and the small mass of the proton. The properties are discussed in terms of quantum mechanics and solid state theory with emphasis on physical principles rather than on theoretical models. The book is intended as an exemplification of the principles of chemical physics for beginning graduate students in physics of physical chemistry and as a text and reference book on the properties of ice for research workers in glaciology, cloud physics, meteorology and associated fields. Although the author assumes a familiarity with fundamental physics, he has taken some trouble to make his account self-contained by reference to the underlying principles in every case or by more detailed discussion where the application is not a standard one.

Radiopharmaceuticals in Nuclear Pharmacy and Nuclear Medicine, 2nd edition, is an essential reference for nuclear pharmacy practitioners, nuclear medicine technologists, and nuclear medicine physicians. It will also be useful as a textbook in programs that educate these practitioners.

The first 12 chapters cover radioactive decay, radiation detection and measurement, radiation protection and risk, radiation safety, radiation biology, licensing and regulatory controls, radionuclide production, radiopharmaceutical chemistry, radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET), the nuclear pharmacy, and quality control. Four of these chapters are written by contributing authors. Together the 12 chapters, all written by nuclear pharmacy practitioners, present the information needed for a pharmacist to become an authorized nuclear pharmacist.

The remaining 11 chapters cover the diagnostic and therapeutic use of radiopharmaceuticals. Chapters on specific body systems (brain, thyroid, heart, lung, liver, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, and bone) are followed by chapters on total body procedures, monoclonal antibodies, in vivo function studies, and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals.

Key Features
*Updates its predecessor, Radiopharmaceuticals in Nuclear Medicine Practice, to include new material in areas such as radiation biology, radiopharmaceuticals used in PET, and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals.
*Features expanded coverage of nuclear medicine applications of radiopharmaceuticals useful for nuclear pharmacy practitioners.
*Some 150 tables and nearly 450 figures enrich and illustrate the text, and each chapter is referenced to the primary literature.

Объем файла большой, а качество сканирование такое себе, в конце - откровенная халтура, но тема актуальная, а нечеткие сканы попадают на предметный указатель - думаю это не самое страшное.

Clusters can be viewed as solids at the nano-scale, yet molecular cluster chemistry and solid state chemistry have traditionally been considered as separate topics. This treatment has made it conceptually difficult to appreciate commonalities of structure and bonding between the two. Using analogous models, this is the first book to form a connecting bridge. Although the focus is on clusters, sufficient attention is paid to solid-state compounds at each stage of the development to establish the interrelationship between the two topics. Comprehensive coverage of cluster types by composition, size and ligation, is provided, as is a synopsis of selected research. Written in an accessible style and highly illustrated to aid understanding, this book is suitable for researchers in inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science, and condensed matter physics.

This self-contained introduction to molecular astrophysics is an excellent summary of present knowledge and outstanding questions, one that will be valued by scientists who wish to become familiar with this field. The contributors describe the distributions and types of molecules observed in galactic and extragalactic sources, including those in the vicinity of diffuse and dense clouds. In addition, chemical reactions in shocks and dynamically evolving clouds are considered. This is a highly suitable text for astrophysicists, physical chemists, atomic and molecular physicists, atmospheric scientists, and students in advanced postgraduate courses on interstellar matter.

Research in biochemistry and molecular biology is proceeding at a furious pace. Thousands of scientists, in both academia and industry, are working in this area. The literature has become unmanageable; the Journal of Biological Chemistry, once a modest-sized monthly, is now a weekly the size of a small telephone book. How did all this frenetic activity begin? The tale is told by Joseph Fruton, historian of science and former head of the department of biochemistry at Yale University, in Proteins, Enzymes, Genes.
The book begins with three background chapters, the first dealing with approaches to the history of science, the next with the institutional settings in which chemical and biologic sciences developed, and the third a philosophical chapter in which Fruton discusses the current sociological "deconstruction" of science -- the claim that scientific data are relative to the societies in which they are obtained rather than objectively true. These are followed by a chapter on ways in which studies of fermentation chemistry led to the discovery of enzymes and five chapters on the history of proteins, oxidation and energy production, intermediary metabolism, DNA and heredity, and biochemical regulation. In each of these five chapters the author shows how the biology arises from the pertinent chemistry -- for example, how the chemistry of the amino acids ultimately revealed the structure of proteins, and how the double helix of DNA is dictated by the structures of the purines and pyrimidines.
In writing this book, Fruton displays formidable erudition and outstanding judgment in selecting what to include and what to leave out. I am personally acquainted with about 40 years' worth of the work described in this book, and as far as I can tell, the author has left out few of the high points. Furthermore, the book is supplemented with a 182-page bibliography and an index of the nearly 2000 scientists who are referred to in the book. Included in the book are such recondite facts as the original use of the word "enzyme," which was employed in medieval times to describe a Eucharist made with yeast, as opposed to the yeast-free "azyme" Eucharist, and the fate of Eduard Buchner, who described one of the first cell-free fermentation systems (a yeast preparation that manufactured ethanol and carbon dioxide from sugar) and who died in World War I while serving in the German army. Here and there, aspects of the personalities of some of the most prominent scientists are described: for instance, Otto Warburg, who had the arrogance of "a Prussian army officer," and Louis Pasteur, whose "skill as a scientific debater" left his opponents in a shambles.
The book is written in a smooth, easy-to-read style. Fruton follows the refreshing practice of using the first-person singular when he refers to himself and spices the text with dry humor.
I suppose there are those who might complain that the book does not go into enough depth, but this is certainly not true of the chapter that describes the way in which enzymology grew out of the chemistry of fermentation. This criticism may apply to the later chapters, but this is not appropriate for a book that was written as a survey of the history of biochemistry and molecular biology during the past 200 years.
Broad coverage and an extensive bibliography make this book of great value as a point of departure for anyone who is interested in a particular aspect of the history of biochemistry or molecular biology. I can recommend this book as a superb choice for anyone interested in biochemistry or molecular biology who wants to know where it all came from.

A relativistic consistent quantum-theoretical description of electronic bound
states in atoms was first introduced in atomic physics as early as the late 1920s
and has been pushed forward since that time. It was believed, however, that
effects stemming from Einstein’s theory of relativity were of little or even no
importance to chemistry. This changed in the 1970s when it was recognized
by Pyykkö, Pitzer, Desclaux, Grant and others that several ‘unusual’ features
in heavy-element chemistry and spectroscopy can only be explained in terms
of so-called relativistic effects. Relativistic effects denote the deviation of results
obtained in a theoretical framework which is in accordance with Einstein’s
theory of special relativity from nonrelativistic Schrödinger quantum
mechanics. Since then, the development of quantum chemical methods for
the description of relativistic electronic structures has made huge progress —
particularly since the late 1980s.

Part of the phenomena in the chemistry and physics of atoms and molecules find their origin in the finite
speed of light and need to be described in the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics. Relativity
reveals itself for instance in the fine details of spectra of molecules and atoms and can nowadays be
accessed by very accurate measurements, even for the elements in the upper region of the periodic
system. If one wants to understand the chemistry and physics of substances containing heavy elements,
for which the electrons close to the atomic nuclei acquire velocities approaching the speed of light, one
needs a relativistic quantum mechanical description from the outset. In this chapter an introduction will
be given on the importance of relativity in chemistry with a brief historical overview that puts my field of
research, relativistic quantum chemistry, in perspective. Finally, the goals of this thesis and an outline of
its contents are presented.

Relativistic Phenomena in the Chemistry of the Platinum Group Metals
EFFECTS ON COORDINATION AND CHEMISORPTION IN HOMOGENEOUS AND HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS
By Geoffrey C. Bond

It may atfirst sight seem strange that concepts developed by Albert Einstein in thefirst decade of the 20th century to explain the structure and dynamics of the cosmos should have anyrelevance to chemistry. However, it is now quite clear that the chemical behaviour of the heavier elements in particular is dominated by what are termed “relativistic effects”. This article explores the implications of this for the coordination and chemisorption of carbon monoxide and unsaturated hydrocarbons, and their reactions in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis involving the platinum group metals.

The present book covers different aspects of proton conduction: the first part describes chemical and physical parameters necessary for fast proton conduction and proposes a classification of different kinds of proton conductors. Comparison is made with other hydrogen containing materials (metals, graphites). The importance of partial water pressure, the role of defects and surface phenomena are discussed. The second part treats the chemistry, structures and electrical properties of typical materials from hydrogen bronzes to polymers via ice, hydroxides, acid sulphates, layer hydrates, clays, gels and porous or fractal media. The third part discusses the methods concerning the proton dynamics from local to macroscopic scale. The fourth part deals with conductivity mechanisms and the last one presents typical applications: electrochemical systems for production or energy storage and microionic devices.

Jason Woolford's thesis describes for the first time, a double [3+2] photocycloaddition of alkenes onto aromatic rings. Modern synthetic chemistry relies on the ability of researchers to uncover new and more efficient ways of creating highly complex structures. This work describes a novel, environmentally friendly photochemical step that converts in one pot, trivial starting materials into otherwise difficult to construct fenstrane frameworks. The rigid cores of these frameworks have significant potential in drug design. Moreover, the novelty of this work overtakes many other methods for the creation of chiral centres. No less than seven chiral centres are created in the photochemical step together with the formation of four carbon-carbon bonds and multifused rings. Jason's innovative work has been the subject of several publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Introduction to Organic Photochemistry John D. Coyle, The Open University, Milton Keynes The purpose of this book is to provide an introductory account of the major types of organic photochemical reactions, to enable those with a prior knowledge of basic organic chemistry to appreciate the differences between processes which occur photochemically (through an electronically excited state) and those that occur thermally (directly from the electronic ground state). The material is organized according to organic functional groups, in parallel with the approach adopted in most general textbooks on organic chemistry. In this respect it differs from many of the existing, older organic photochemistry texts. The first chapter provides an account of the distinctive features of photochemical reactions, and a physical/mechanistic framework for the descriptions in the rest of the book. The overall emphasis is on organic photoreactions potentially useful in synthesis. The book thus integrates this branch of chemistry with broader aspects of the subject, and introduces the reader to important applications of organic photochemistry.

The protection of the environment is our responsibility, whether we are a member of the public as a citizen or consumer or as an industrialist producing consumer products, or as a part of Government, either in setting environmental policy or in regulating environmental pollution. Concern for the environment and both national and international regulations will continue to put pressure on industries to minimize their impact on the environment. There are great business opportunities for companies to supply and adopt cleaner technologies and more environmentally friendly techniques. There are challenges to be met in developing new products and processes that are more e¦cient and produce less waste. There are savings to be made in avoiding the increasing costs of environmentally acceptable waste disposal. There are further opportunities. New technologies can bring together the beneÞts of greater e¦ciency, less pollution, and a minimizing of impact on the environment as a whole. Maintaining the status quo is not acceptable.

This book is mainly concerned with building a narrow but secure ladder which polymer chemists or engineers can climb from the primary level to an advanced level without great difficulty (but by no means easily, either).
This book describes some fundamentally important topics, carefully chosen, covering subjects from thermodynamics to molecular weight and its distribution effects. For help in self-education the book adopts a "Questions and Answers" format. The mathematical derivation of each equation is shown in detail. For further reading, some original references are also given.

The principal objective of this book is to stimulate interest in research that will extend available theory towards a greater understanding of the steps involved in solid-state decompositions and the properties of solids that control reactivities. Much of the activity in this field has been directed towards increasing the range of reactants for which decomposition kinetic data is available, rather than extending insights into the fundamental chemistry of the reactions being studied. The first part of the book (Chapters 1-6) is concerned with theoretical aspects of the subject. The second part (Chapters 7-17) surveys groups of reactions classified by similarities of chemical composition. The final Chapter (18) reviews the subject by unifying features identified as significant and proposes possible directions for future progress.
Studies of thermal reactions of ionic compounds have contributed considerably to the theory of solid-state chemistry. Furthermore, many of these rate processes have substantial technological importance, for example, in the manufacture of cement, the exploitation of ores and in the stability testing of drugs, explosives and oxidizing agents. Despite the prolonged and continuing research effort concerned with these reactions, there is no recent overall review. This book is intended to contribute towards correcting this omission. The essential unity of the subject is recognized by the systematic treatment of reactions, carefully selected to be instructive and representative of the subject as a whole. The authors have contributed more than 200 original research articles to the literature, many during their 25 years of collaboration.
Features of this book:
• Gives a comprehensive in-depth survey of a rarely-reviewed subject.
• Reviews methods used in studies of thermal decompositions of solids.
• Discusses patterns of subject development perceived from an extensive literature survey.
This book is expected to be of greatest value and interest to scientists concerned with the chemical properties and reactions of solids, including chemists, physicists, pharmacists, material scientists, crystallographers, metallurgists and others. This wide coverage of the literature dealing with thermal reactions of solids will be of value to both academic and industrial researchers by reviewing the current status of the theory of the subject. It could also provide a useful starting point for the exploitation of crystalline materials in practical and industrial applications. The contents will also be relevant to a wide variety of researchers, including, for example, those concerned with the stabilities of polymers and composite materials, the processing of minerals, the shelf-lives of pharmaceuticals, etc.
