Fully revised and updated, the Sixth Edition of this popular dictionary is the ideal reference resource for students of chemistry, either in high school or in college. The new edition features more than 4,300 entries, including hundreds of new terms. The Dictionary covers all aspects of chemistry--from physical chemistry to biochemistry--including topics such as metallurgy, materials science, forensic science, and geology. There are also biographical entries on key figures in the field. The book has single or double-page feature articles on important topics such as polymers and crystal defects, and chronologies that chart the main discoveries in such fields as atomic theory, biochemistry, explosives, and plastics. The new edition also features web links accessed via a companion website, featuring additional information that is regularly updated to ensure that it stays fresh. The volume concludes with nine appendices, including the periodic table, SI units, the chemical elements, Nobel prizewinners, and useful websites.

In attempting to correlate theoretical principles with industrial practice the author has not done more than to mention, in cases where it seems desirable, the fact that a given synthesis is the basis of industrial processes. No effort has been made, in most cases, to describe the technical procedure. In a few of the more common processes some description of the industrial procedure is given, but without any claim that it is exact in minute detail. It is important to mphasize
the fact, that oftentimes in industrial practice, reactions while no doubt following the course worked out in the laboratory, are nevertheless frequently shortened by doubling up or by changing physical conditions, so that the process and the laboratory synthesis seem to be quite distinct.

download/file.php?id=6120

A text that truly embodies its name, CHEMISTRY: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE connects the chemistry students learn in the classroom (principles) with real world uses of chemistry (practice). The authors accomplish this by starting each chapter with an application drawn from a chemical field of interest and revisiting that application throughout the chapter. The Case Studies, Practice of Chemistry essays, and Ethics in Chemistry questions reinforce the connection of chemistry topics to areas such as forensics, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and industry.

Succeed in your course with the help of this proven best-seller! John McMurry's Organic Chemistry is consistently praised as the most clearly written book available for the course. In John McMurry's words: "I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words." Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry book applies to McMurry: It works!

When this innovative textbook first appeared in 1984 it rapidly became a great success throughout the world and has already been translated into several European and Asian languages. Now the authors have completely revised and updated the text, including more than 2000 new literature references to work published since the first edition. No page has been left unaltered but the novel features which proved so attractive have been retained. The book presents a balanced, coherent and comprehensive account of the chemistry of the elements for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This crucial central area of chemistry is full of ingenious experiments, intriguing compounds and exciting new discoveries.

The project of compiling a glossary of terms in Chemistry was started in 1995 on request of the International Sectors of Chemistry. It was felt that in such a rapidly growing, interdisciplinary field, communication would be greatly facilitiated by standardization of terminology.

Example of the entries:
Acidity : For Brønsted acids it means the tendency of a compound to act as a hydron donor. It can be quantitatively expressed by the acid dissociation constant of the compound in water or some other specified medium. For Lewis acids it relates to the association constants of Lewis adducts and pi-adducts. (2) Of a medium: The use of the term is mainly restricted to a medium containing Brønsted acids, where it means the tendency of the medium to hydronate a specific reference base. It is quantitatively expressed by the appropriate acidity function.
